For many, moon is just another celestial object or the earth's only natural satellite. But, for many the moon goes just beyond being yet another body in the space. This heavenly object has several mythological implications too. This is why there are numerous gods and goddesses associated with the moon. Here is taking a look at some of the most popular moon gods and goddesses.

One of the most popular moon gods is Arma. This god is believed to have some connection with the Greek god Hermes. There are some theories that suggest that Arma was a fairly good looking good. Arma is considered to be a lunar personification in Hittie.

Amidst moon goddesses, Artemis is the most popular. Artemis is a Greek goddess who eventually became associated with the moon. Greek mythology has it that Helios was the original sun god and Selene, the moon goddess. But, Artemis came to be associated with Selene and eventually went on to become the moon goddess. The same happened in the case of Apollo and Helios too as it was eventually Apollo who was considered the Sun god.

Bendis is yet another goddess who is believed to be associated with the moon. This goddess is of Thracian origin. Though Bendis is essentially a moon goddess, she is considered as the goddess of hunt too. The Greeks associated Bendis with Artemis.

An Egyptian god associated with the moon is Khons. The literal meaning of the name of this god is 'the wanderer'. However, some people refer to this moon god as Khonsu. Khons or Khonsu is believed to be the son of Amen and Mut. Legend has it that this moon god was also capable of flying.

Mên is another popular name in the list of moon gods. This god is known to have a Phyrgian origin. This lunar god is known to be associated with healing and fertility. At the same time, it is also known to be associated with punishment. The symbol of Mên also has the points of crescent moons on the shoulders. A pine cone or patera in the outstretched right hand is a notable aspect of the symbol of this god. In the left hand, this god carries a sword or lance. Mên is also believed to wear a Phyrgian cap.

There are numerous other moon gods and goddesses that have different origins and different legends behind them. Some popular ones include Selene, Nanna, Soma, Tsuki-Yami, Yarikh amidst several others. Each of these moon gods and goddesses are worshipped in different corners of the globe.
